UN Chief Race: Grynspan Reported Ahead After 4th Straw Poll
Jerome Bonnafont, France's envoy to the UN and the council's president for September, confirmed that the round had concluded. He told reporters: “The fourth round of straw polls has taken place. Each candidate will be informed of the results through the respective permanent representatives of nominating member states."
Bonnafont added that the president of the UN General Assembly would also be told the poll was over, and confirmed that seven candidates remained in the race.
Multiple reports indicated that Costa Rican diplomat Rebeca Grynspan led the field.
The secret ballots are meant to gauge support among the council's 15 members and could thin the field before a formal recommendation goes to the General Assembly. A candidate needs at least nine votes to win the council's backing, but any of the five permanent members (the US, China, France, Russia and the UK) can block a candidate with a veto. The General Assembly must then appoint the nominee, a step generally seen as a formality once the council agrees.
Guterres' term ends on Dec. 31.
